St. Matthew Day Drive-Thru Celebration

St. Matthew Day Drive-Thru Celebration Event! – On Sunday, September 27th between 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM, we celebrated our first general gathering of any kind since March 8th with a drive-thru experience at the church. The Vestry guided each vehicle (with all people remaining in their vehicles) into the parking lot where the festivities took place. Folks were encouraged to wear RED and decorate their vehicles. Activities included Fr. Kendall blessing each vehicle with Holy Water, hearing live music from Jeff and Nan Clapp, and shouting words of love and affirmation to each other from a distance. Special packets were also handed out to each vehicle (per COVID 19 mitigation guidelines) which included a brief history of St. Matthew Day, favorite pie recipes from parishioners, a biography of a long-time parishioner, and a page for children’s activities. Folks also saw our new retaining wall (thank you Building & Grounds Team!). Our theme was Bind Us Together as we came together to celebrate all things St Matthew. The Vestry even recorded a Promo Video!

A fabulous day of abundant celebrations! - Today we hosted our diocesan assisting bishop, the Rt. Rev. Cabell Tennis, Bishop of Delaware (ret.), who presided over one baptism, four confirmations, two receptions, and two reaffirmations of faith. We even had the opportunity to pray over the brave women and men who serve at our local fire department. The Holy Spirit is still on the move at St. Matthew!

Today we celebrated the power of God's love in community. After a long journey for both parish and priest, a relationship has been realized through grace, courage, and faith.

Banner Description
The banner behind the altar was created as a symbol representing the Celebration of Mutual Ministry between our parish and our new rector, Fr. Haynes. The dominant color of red is used to commemorate the St. Matthew’s feast day, which was recognized on the date of Fr. Haynes’ installation. Church tradition uses red to symbolize the blood of martyrs as well as fire to symbolize the presence of the Holy Spirit. The fabric has many textures, shades and sizes representing all people from all backgrounds, coming together in community with one another. The fabric is woven throughout as a reflection of our diverse selves naturally weaving our way through the lives of our neighbors, friends, and strangers. Burlap was chosen specifically for Fr. Haynes as it’s faint gold shimmer reminds us of the color that represents the installation of a priest. The texture of the burlap is rough, as not to forget that the relationship and ministry with our parish will ebb and flow with some good days and some more challenging than others without ever forgetting that we’re in this together. The wire template is purposefully bent, snapped, and broken, and held together by wire, sticks and glue as a symbol of our imperfections which are bound in place by the Holy Spirit. The white toile reflects how gently the Holy Spirit moves amongst us, yet at the same time holds us up with great strength, binding us together in unison and unconditional love. Lastly, the cross is a mirror image of the prominent cross so graciously and quietly suspended in our sanctuary. Amidst the layers of fabric and wire, we are continually reminded of our own calling through Christ our Lord to serve others with mutuality and love. To give greater time to ponder our new relationship with each other, Fr. Haynes has requested the banner remain in place until the end of the Season after Pentecost, which runs through Thanksgiving. |

Today we had the great pleasure of hosting Fr. Dale Johnson, PhD, a monk in the Syriac Orthodox Church as he presented to us an opportunity to bring hope through seeds to thousands of Christian refugees fleeing ISIS in Syria and Iraq. For more information on Seeds of Hope, click here.

2015 Theological Education/Super Bowl Weekend

Guest Lecturer/Preacher Visits St. Matthew!
On Superbowl weekend, we had the great pleasure of hosting Dr. Deirdre Good, Professor of New Testament at the General Theological Seminary in New York City who is a specialist in the Synoptic Gospels, Christian Origins, Noncanonical writings and biblical languages (Greek and Coptic). Her powerful book, Jesus the Meek King was a great influence on our priest, Fr. Haynes, as a means of unpacking the role of earthly power in Jesus day in contrast to his divine virtues. Events included a soup supper and lecture on Saturday, January 31st and sermons given at both the 8 AM and 10 AM liturgies on Sunday, February 1st in celebration of Theological Education Sunday (seen below with bulletin). The weekend capped off with a fantastic Super Bowl party in our parish hall! |
